#sitawaignited Nakuru Launch10:44:00 AM
Happy New Year Sweetlings,
Pray you all had an UBER holiday break. Mine was so so over the top, I need a blog series to take y'all through it. It back to work and as I had said 2013 is Power to the Poet year and to kick it off, I will be launching #sitawaignited Nakuru Branch on Saturday 19th at Sisima Coffee. Looking forward to hosting each and everyone of you. Here is a press release;
Sitawa Ignited is a monthly evening of poetry, wine and everything in between (discussions, dance, laughter, tears and screenings) run by yours truly.The evening, founded in 2008 under the name Poetry at Discovery, was the third poetry night in Nairobi after Kwani and Nu-metro sponsored poetry nights and the first non-sponsored poetry night in Nairobi.Sitawa's event was unique in the fact that it recognized the power of promoting aspiring talent and incorporating discussions and meaning to pieces as opposed to being a poetry recital night. The evening provided a platform to aspiring poets to showcase their work as guest poets as opposed to performing late in the night after seasoned poets and it can boost that most of the poets who went through the platform have since climbed ranks to be spoken word champions and gone ahead to open their own poetry nights beside conquering other poetic mountains. Besides, poets, the platform also opened up to aspiring AfroFusion/Neosoul bands like Lele and Aziza as there were no avenues for such bands to showcase their work.
In 2012, the evening changed its name to Sitawa Ignited changed from Poetry at Discovery after acquiring a new home at The Business Lounge on the 4th Floor of Nakumatt Junction where it takes place every last Saturday of the month. Due to growth and demand from its followers and the influx of poetry nights in Nairobi, Sitawa saw the need to open a Sitawa Ignited branch in Nakuru.
The evening will be happening every 1st Saturday of the month at Sisima Coffee which is located on the 1st Floor of Spike Centre just above Chase Bank on Kenyatta Avenue. Just like the Nairobi event,Sitawa Ignited Nakuru will be open to aspiring poets and bands from Nakuru who would like to showcase their work and also be a platform for the locals to discuss their issues over some wine and snacks in the lovely Sisima Coffee ambiance. Opening a Nakuru branch will also provide room for exchange with poets from Nairobi which in the long run adds to the promotion of poetry as a means of livelihood and also expose other talents not necessarily found in Nairobi.
The Nakuru Branch Launch will be on Saturday 19th January at Sisima Coffee from 3p and it will see performances from both local and Nairobi poets and bands. The evening will have a brief screening and discussion just to give the guests a feel of a Sitawa Ignited evening. Entrance to this launch will be Ksh 500 (which includes Sisima Coffee's top delicacies and drink)
